We transformed the north-facing, small bare back yard into an inviting and informal garden that offers a place to relax and dine, maximises the space and seamlessly connects the house to the outdoors.
Inspired by the canopy of the new extension with cues from Japanese courtyards, we created a plant-rich layered garden that offers year-round interest.
From the living room, a timber walkway leads to the larch deck terrace, an area that offers a place to relax and/or dine in the sunniest part of the garden.
A light-framed bespoke black metal pergola elevates the far end of the garden, harmonising with the canopy outside the kitchen and serving as a focal feature in the garden whilst screening from houses beyond. It also offers an intimate “room” nestled in planting.
The shady garden is perfect for woodland and woodland edge plants. In time, the layered trees, shrubs, and perennials will fill the garden, further enriching the space.
Large reclaimed stepping stones set in gravel lead you around the garden, creating a relaxed gentle path that links the different areas.
Feature plant-filled pots nestled between the kitchen extension and the original house, adds interest to enjoy from within and to this otherwise dead area.
To maximise the functionality of the garden the rotary drier can be set aside, creating a space to enjoy an evening fire.
Our experience with Rachel and her team was positive from start to finish. Her experience and knowledge gave us to confidence to believe her design would make our small back garden look great. The space has been transformed. We are very much looking forward to using it when the better weather arrives.
