A Climate and Nature Positive Family Garden
Welcome to our climate and nature positive design garden! Nestled on a north-east facing plot, this sun-soaked garden measures 90m2. Bounded by mature trees and shrubs, this garden offers an immersive space for people and a haven for wildlife, especially bees, whilst being a functional and practical space for a modern family.
Clever design makes the most of the space
Drawing on diagonals from the house, we made the space feel deeper than it is and created a journey through the garden from the kitchen patio doors to the outdoor gym via a stepping stone and gravel path.
Repurposed, reclaimed and organic materials
We repurposed monoblock pavers existing onsite and set them in gravel, softening with very low growing plants.
We moved the dining terrace away from the house where it makes the most of the sun and draws the clients into the garden. Nestled in planting, we enclosed the terrace within a timber pergola that offers a sense of scale – connecting the house to the garden – and screens the neighbouring buildings.
Places for people
The extended deck to the garden room now offers ample places to sit and enjoy the wildlife pond – whether watching from after or hanging over the edge and offers alternative views of the garden and planting. Sound from gentle movement in the pond will also offers another layer of interest.
A practical garden
Functionally, the wheelie bins are easily accessible from the house, but screened from the garden, and the removable rotary line is great for drying washing in the most sustainable way, whilst it is within easy access of the utility room.
Around part of the rotary line area, a border comprising lower planting along with ground creeping planting within gravel beneath the line will offer a visual distraction from the washing whilst not interfering with the drying of clothes. When the washing line is put away, the newly available space offers additional seating areas for sitting around a fire pit.
The result is a garden perfectly aligned to our needs – it has transformed our living space and how we use it as a family.
The garden provides a joyful, harmonious experience where we feel cocooned in nature with the mix of planting and the wildlife it now attracts. LM
